INDIA AND UNITED NATIONS

THE SECURITY COUNCIL

The Security Council is the body entrusted with the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security under the UN Charter. It has 15 Members, five permanent and 10 members elected periodically for a term of two years. Each Member has one vote. All Member States of the UN are obligated to comply with Council decisions. India has served on the Security Council as an elected member on seven occasions so far - in 1950 - 51, 1967 - 68, 1972 - 73, 1977 - 78, 1984 - 85, 1991 - 92, and 2011 - 2012. India's election to the Security Council during the last instance in October 2010 with 187 votes was the highest number obtained in recent years.

India has participated constructively in the Council’s activities and has remained fully engaged in all its deliberations during its tenures. During its last tenure in the Council in 201 1 - 12, India held the Presidency of the Council twice, first time in August 2011 and second time in November 2012. India had organized an open debate on peacekeeping in August 2011 and an open debate on maritime piracy as a threat to international peace and security in November 2012. India actively participates in the open debates of the Security Council as and when they are scheduled.

Notwithstanding its efforts to forge consensus on the reform of Security Council by expanding its membership and inclusion of India as a permanent member, India has also announced its candidature for the UNSC non-permanent membership for the period 2021-2022.
