Internship with PMI New York

The internship programme at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations provides an excellent opportunity for young scholars to familiarize themselves with India’s approach to multilateralism and handling of global issues at the UN.

Nature of Engagement 

Interns shall report to and work under close supervision of a Domain Expert. They may be required to conduct research, write reports, analyze evolving developments, or carry out any other task the Expert entrusts.

Eligibility Criteria for Applying

  •  Interested Indian citizens, OCI card holders and foreign nationals living in the United States may apply for the internship. The applicant must possess a valid F1 visa or a work visa such as G1/G4/ J1/ H1B / L1A / Green Card / US nationality. B1/B2 doesn’t count. 
  •  Final year students (undergraduate / graduate) are eligible to apply. 
  •  Preference may be given to applicants with excellent academic track records from institutions of repute and credible recommendations from faculty who have taught/guided them in the past, and also to research scholars. An intern must not have attained the age of 30 years on the date of application. Applications will be received at any time of the year.

Duration of Internship

The applicant will be informed about the start of their internship upon selection. Internship shall be for a maximum of six months.

Internship Programme

  •  An intern will be required to work from within the Mission’s premises, from 0930-1800 hrs, on all working days, except holidays listed on its website.
  •  No financial remuneration shall be paid to the interns. 
  •  The internship programme shall neither be an offer of employment nor an assurance of employment with the Mission.
  •  The internship programme shall include an attachment with one of the Wings of the Mission, and the intern shall have an orientation session on the organization and functioning of the PMI and the working of the various Wings of the Mission.
  •  On successful completion of the internship, a certificate will be issued by the Mission.

Check List

The application for the internship must include the following:

  1.  Five Original sets each of Application Form and the Security Questionnaire (back-to-back printing). Photographs [2x2 size, like US visa format], and signatures have to be original. 
  2.  Copy of at least three documentary proofs of identity which may include a copy of Passport/ Aadhaar Card/ Voter ID/ PAN Card / Driving License and proof of residence.
  3.  Curriculum Vitae. 
  4.  Introduction letter from the Head of Institution on the official stationery where the applicant studied/studying.
  5.  No objection certificate from University/Institution in case the internship is to be pursued in parallel with an ongoing course. 
  6.  Self-attested certificates and transcripts for all the accomplishments mentioned in Paras 8, 9 and 13 of the Application Form (educational qualifications, current courses being pursued and projects undertaken).

Selection Procedure

All applications will be scrutinized by the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi, whose decision shall be final and binding. The selection process may take up to 3-4 months.

Termination of internship

The Mission may terminate the engagement of the intern at any point without giving any reason. The decision shall be final in this regard. Interns can leave the programme if they so desire, giving the Mission prior notice of one week.
