DR ATUL KHARE APPOINTED AS USG AND HEAD OF DEPT OF FIELD SUPPORT IN UNITED NATIONS

    The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations welcomes the announcement of the appointment of Dr. Atul Khare as the next Under Secretary General and Head of Department of the Field Support.  The Permanent Mission has full confidence that Dr. Khare will discharge the important responsibilities entrusted to him with complete distinction. 
 
2. Dr. Khare joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1984.  Apart from Headquarters, he has served in Indian Missions in Paris, Dakar, Port Louis and London.  He has also served in the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations from May 1997 to January 2001.  Dr. Khare has served the United Nations in various capacities, including as Assistant Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations and Special Representative of the Secretary General for Timor-Leste.
 
3. India is a leading troop contributing country for UN peacekeeping operations, having contributed more than 180,000 troops and having participated in 44 of the 69 missions mandated so far.  India’s commitment to peacekeeping testifies to its strong and active participation in the efforts of the United Nations for the maintenance of international peace and security.  India has also welcomed the establishment of the High Level Panel on Peacekeeping Operations and looks forward to closely working with it.
