G4 Director General Meeting on Security Council Reform in Berlin

Joint Press Statement

27 February, 2015

1. The Directors General of UN Affairs of the G4 (Brazil, Germany, India, Japan) met in Berlin on 27th February to exchange views on the current state of play and to develop concrete ideas on how to move the issue of Security Council reform decisively forward.  The last G4 meeting, at the level of Foreign Ministers, had taken place in New York on 20th September, 2014.

2. The meeting on 27 February was chaired by Dr. Patricia Flor, Director General for United Nations and Global Issues at the German Federal Foreign Office, and attended by the G4 countries’ Director General and Permanent Representatives to the United Nations.

3. The G4 shared the view that 70 years after the founding of the United Nations and 10 years after the 2005 World Summit, during which the Heads of States and Governments unanimously called for an early reform, it is high time to finally making the Security Council more representative and fit for the 21st century.  The G4 welcomed the strong commitment shown by the President of the General Assembly H.E. Sam Kutesa in making reform of the Security Council a top priority and also expressed their strong affirmation of support to the new Chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiations, H.E. Ambassador Courtenay Rattray, and wished him all success in pursuing a text based negotiation process.

4. The G4 agreed to continue their close cooperation with each other and with reform oriented partners to actively continue promoting a comprehensive reform of the Security Council through a concrete outcome.
